"Drinking 2 cups of water before meals when on a diet leads to 40% more weight loss! After decades of anecdotal evidence that drinking water helps with weight loss, scientific evidence has finally been gathered that proves the rumors to be true. For the first time, a randomized controlled trial was done dealing with water consumption during dieting and the results were startling. Over a 12 week period, those who drank two cups of water before each meal lost 40% more weight than those who did not." 
"The study was headed up by Dr. Brenda Davy of Virginia Tech University. Results of the study were released in Boston at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. The study was a follow up to another study which found that people tend to consume around 90 fewer calories per meal if they drink two cups of water before meals.
